I shocked myself...literally!

So, I did a dumb thing. I got tired of waiting for my husband to change out the light fixture in our closet that quit working. I decided to do it myself. It's a pain to try to find clothes in a dark closet. I think part of it is now that I'm pregnant, I have this list of things I want to get done around the house so I don't have to worry about it after the baby gets here. I turned off the breaker to our bedroom, got up on a chair, and went about taking down the light fixture. In the process, I touched a black wire and got a good zap. I felt it go down my arm and I had to sit down for a minute. It totally freaked me out. Of course, I immediately began wondering if I could have hurt my baby. Right at that second, some friends of my husband appeared without calling first. My husband had no idea this had happened because he was in another room. He otherwise would not have let me do that. So I'm in agony while these people are here because I'm dying to get online and start looking up any info on getting shocked while pregnant. I was very distracted. After they left, I tell my husband. He totally blows it off and says not to worry. Well, that wasn't reassuring. He was more upset that I was up on the chair trying to do this. The information I found online wasn't very helpful and scared me more. So, I just had one of the doctors in my OB office paged. He asked me if I had any burns on my skin where I touched the wire, which I don't. He then told me not to worry and that it would take quite a bit of juice to cause a problem. I'm still worried. I'm sure part of it was hormones, but I started crying last night at the thought that I could have hurt or killed my baby. I could never forgive myself. My next OB appt is in 2 weeks and I'll be almost 10 weeks at that point. I'm anxious to hear a heartbeat.

It turns out the closet light was on a different breaker than our bedroom lights. After this happened I heard the air purifier in our room running. It's plugged into the other side of the wall where our closet is. Why didn't I notice this before I got shocked?

I am glad you are fine and i hope that there will be no effect to the baby inside you. That is indeed scary though and i would not dare do that myself, i have no knowledge on electrical things so i must keep myself away from those things. Hope to hear good news on your next appointment.

At least you flipped a breaker. I tried to change a light fixture in our bedroom once thinking I was all smart and could do it without walking all the way down to the basement to flip the breaker. I was doing good until the ground wire touched the metal plate of the fixture - OUCH. I wasn't pregnant, but I was postpartum. Hormones make us do crazy stuff.

Well, I think if you are like me when I was pregnant with both my girls. Who am I kidding, I am still like this.. you are nesting and preparing yourself to get it done! Not later but right now.

I do not think you have to worry so much about this. Now if you had zapped yourself and held on for a longer period of time then you might want to worry, but try not to stress too much. And I know it is hard not too. It just comes natural being a mommy. You will get tired of hearing this but it is just your hormones. Good luck and try not to do anymore electrical things.

I know how worried you are. Just think that you and your baby will be fine and believe in your OB.
In my case, I inhaled paint because our room was repainted.

I got a good jolt when I was pregnant with my first. I plugged a radio in, not realizing the new puppy had chewed through the cord. Knocked me half way across the room.

Don't worry. The baby's fine. (He might have curly hair though. :))

Oh I get that it has to be done NOW feeling. I made a list and DH took most of it and promised it would be done before the baby got here. I nagged him all the time, but writing the list down helped calm me down alot.
I am glad you are okay! I am sure if the Dr. says don't worry you don't HAVE to although actually doing that is impossilbe!

Man, I cracked up when I read this-glad you are ok. This happened to me as well when I was pregnant-everything was fine and now she is 3 years old. I got shocked from our "free lawnmower". My eletrical engineer husband had me hold the sparkplug as he tried to fix it and gave me a shock. Can you say DADDY BRAIN
